As the weather warms and we settle into this new season, spring pollen is out in full force. Yes, that yellow dust that has an uncanny knack of coating virtually every outdoor surface is back. While spring pollen might be a bit of an annoyance, its effects go further than that. Read on to learn how this seasonal substance can impact your metal buildings — and ways to ensure your operations remain safe and healthy.
Slips and Falls Can Become More Common
You might not put too much consideration into the safety concerns surrounding spring pollen, but they do, in fact, exist. In certain areas — particularly those surrounded by trees — accumulation can lead to slick or hard-to-see walkways. And that can lead to falls. Keep an eye on the sidewalks and parking lots surrounding your metal building, and floors just inside entryways, too. When you do notice accumulation, sweep it away. It just takes a couple minutes, and it’s worth it to avoid potential client or team member injuries.
Pollen Can Leave Allergy Sufferers Feeling Awful
Although you’ll never be able to combat all the spring pollen, there are ways to help your building keep it outside where it belongs. (Of course, we’re referring to your building’s HVAC system.) Give your system the once-over, making sure filters are in place and undamaged, and that air is moving as it should be. If you do notice something out of the ordinary, get repair work scheduled sooner, rather than later. Your team members and customers will thank you for it, and you’ll have an overall healthier space. Spring Pollen Wreaks Havoc on Roofs and Drainage
Just as fallen leaves can make it difficult — and, in extreme situations, impossible — for gutters and downspouts to carry out their work, pollen can, too. After wind blows spring pollen onto a metal building’s roof, it joins the likes of seed pods, leaves and other debris. While that mix can (and often does) find itself later carried off by winds, it can just as easily make itself at home, clogging gutters and marring your building’s look. Regular roof and gutter cleaning can make a world of difference. Make it a point to book cleanings during fall and spring to keep your building looking its best, and to avoid clogs that could lead to water damage.
