Benefits of Steel Buildings: Their Eco-Friendly Nature

Among the many (many) benefits of steel buildings, the notion that they’re an environmentally friendly option is something not everyone realizes. After all, we talk quite a bit about the fact that the structures are durable, easy to maintain — and cost-effective, too. The environmental element? It just isn’t something that always gets factored into day-to-day decision-making. But at Metallic Products, we’re big believers that a building that’s good for the environment is good for just about everybody. Read on to learn a few reasons Mother Nature loves metal buildings.

Pre-Engineered and Prefabricated Metal Buildings Cut Down on Construction Waste
Because PEMBs and prefabricated buildings arrive at the construction site either with sections already put together, or with everything ready to go together quickly, construction crews are alleviated of a lot of the work that creates waste. There’s no need to drill holes, which means no metal shavings scattered about. In a similar vein, the steel’s already cut, so there’s no excess to dump, repurpose or recycle.

Steel Itself is Incredibly Environmentally Friendly
Not only is steel 100% recyclable, but, as the American Institute of Steel Construction notes, the structural steel created in the United States is made up of about 93% recycled scrap. Interestingly enough, steel doesn’t lose any of its strength, even after going through multiple rounds of the recycling process (or “multi-cycling,” as some say). On top of everything else, steel production facilities themselves have taken steps to decrease their carbon footprint by lowering emissions and the like.

Steel Buildings Last a Really, Really Long Time
Unlike structures prone to rot, termites and budget-breaking wear and tear, your metal building is meant to last. While there is the possibility that mold and rust can make themselves known, such incidents are rare, and they can be remedied much more easily than in other structures. If you do find yourself needing to make a repair, it’s easy to simply swap out a building panel or patch up an affected area, rather than demo and start anew. (And remember, any steel you dispose of can be recycled!) With proper maintenance, your steel building will serve countless generations well.

Energy Efficiency and Steel Buildings Go Hand in Hand
Adding insulation to your metal building’s wall and roof panels keeps indoor conditions healthy and comfortable — and cuts down on the need to flip on your air conditioning or heating system. Of course, if you opt to take things a step further and incorporate solar panels into your design, steel buildings’ versatile nature makes doing so a cinch.

It’s no secret that the Metallic Products team is big on metal buildings — but we’re big on the environment, too.
